190,972. Cachemaille, A. S., (Westing- house Gear & Dynamometer Co.). May 10, 1922. Toothed gearing for turbines &c. Two or more pinions engage a common gear wheel and the pinions are carried by floating supports connected with fluid-pressure means for controlling the load distribution between the pinions. In the construction shown, a turbine 10 drives, through gearing 15-17 and quill intermediate shafts, double pinions 18, 19 gearing with the gear-wheel 20 on the propeller shaft. Each end of each pinion is carried upon a corrugated diaphragm 25 in a fluid cylinder, the cylinders being all connected to an accumulator 29, so that the stress supported by each individual diaphragm depends upon its area. If the turbine is required to reverse, opposing diaphragms and supports for the pinions are provided, or, as the load during reverse is usually low, a fixed abutment 32 for the support of the pinion 19 only may be provided, so that that pinion transmits the whole load.
