Abstract

Hydraulic transmission of power. - In a hydraulic coupling comprising a pump, the controlling means are arranged in a fixed position outside the coupling, and are connected by passages to the coupling. In the form shown in Fig. 1, employing a gearwheel pump, the spaces at opposite sides of the pump are connected to pipes 17, 21, the pipe 17 leading to branches containing a relief valve 27, a controlling valve 26, and a suction valve 28, the whole arrangement permitting a free-wheel action to be obtained. In another form, pump cylinders are connected to pipes 42, 45, Fig. 3, a controlling valve 46 and an adjustable relief valve 47 being provided. In an arrangement for driving a propeller 52, Fig. 5, or for starting an engine 50 from the propeller, the coupling 53 is connected to pipes 56, 57, each provided with a controlling valve 61, a suction valve 65, and a relief valve 63. In all forms, the torque transmitted may be measured by means of a pressure gauge.
