Abstract

13,340. Braddock, E. I. Feb. 24, [Convention date]. Circular-flow type; reversing. - A circularflow turbine comprises one or more disks fixed to a main shaft d, Fig. 3, and provided with side flanges 12, 13, Fig. 4, between which are situated radially-disposed blades 15, 16. The steam in passing round the wheel passes between the blades 15, impinges upon the blades 16, and divides into two streams, which pass on the sides of the blades 16 and then impinge on the next blades 15. In this way the steam is compelled to pass in a tortuous path and impinge repeatedly upon the blades of the wheel. Each wheel is provided with inlet ports 25, 29 and 26, 28, for the two directions of running respectively, which are fitted with liners 70, 71, Fig. 12, to form expanding nozzles. Steam is admitted to one or other of these pairs of ports through piston valves 36 (one of which only is shown). The steam passes almost half round the wheel and exhausts into exhaust ports 27, 30.
