Abstract

13,172. Roth, C. June 29,1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Elastic-fluid turbines.-Nozzle chambers of increasing capacity are arranged in series around a turbinewheel, adapted especially for propelling vessels, and live steam is admitted to one or other of these chambers according to the speed required. For ordinary speeds steam enters by the inlet 1 (Figs. 1 and 2), passes through a nozzle 4, the vanes of a wheel 7 and chamber 8, past a non-return valve 9 into a larger nozzle chamber 2, where it is again directed on to the wheel and exhausted into a larger nozzle chamber 3 past a non-return valve 11. For a higher speed, steam is admitted directly to the chamber 2 by the port 2<a>, the valve 9 sealing the chamber 8. For still higher speeds, a port 3<a> admits steam to the chamber 3. In a modification, the nozzle chambers are arranged at different radial distances, the wheel having concentric vane rings. Fig. 5 illustrates a piston controlling-valve for regulating admission to the nozzles 28 or 29 by the steam-supply pipes 26 or 27. Another device consists of a cam-drum which by its rotation successively operates the valves sealing the nozzle chambers.
