ELASTIC FLUID TURBINE.

UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GIISTAF DALEN, OF STOCKHOLM', SWEDEN.
ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF DALnN, eh .ineer', a citizen of Sweden, residing at Stoc holm, Sweden, have invented a certain new and useful Im rovement in Elastic-Fluid Y Turbines, of which the following is a specifithe other side of sai cation.
The present invention refers to an imrovement in elastic fluid turbines of the raial flow type.
Figure 1 shows the turbine in longitudinal section andFig. 2 in transverse section on the line :c.w in Fig. 1.
On the turbine shaft 1 is mounted a turbine wheel 2 provided with a number of concentric rows of buckets 3,- between which concentric rows of guide-blades (1 on the stationary intermediate ortion 5 (project. On interme iate portion 5. a second wheel 6 is mounted on the shaft Said 'wheel 6 may be provided with concentric rows of buckets 7, between which concentric rows of guide blades 8. on'the sta-. tionary portion 5 project in the same manner as concernlngthe Wheel 2. Or. 7 and 8 may indicate concentric rows of tightening rings, fixed on the wheel 6 and the stationary portion 5.
9 indicates the fluid inlet ipe, opening into a central chamber 10 of tie intermediate portion 5, said chamber communicating through 0 between the wheels 2 and 6 and the stationary portion 5 13, 14, 15 and 16 indicate concentric chambers formed in the intermediate portion '5, each communicating through openings 17,18, 19, 20,- 21, 22, 23, 24 with said spaces between the wheels 2 and 6 and the intermediate portion 5 in equal radial distances from the shaft 1.
25 indicates the turbine casing, 26 the shaft bearings and 27 the exhaust.
Fluid, for instance steam, admitted through ipe 9 and flowi ine buckets 3 an guide blades 4, will exert an axial thrust in the direction to the left on the wheel 2, said thrust decreasing from the center to the periphery of the wheel in the same degree as the pressure of. the motive fluid decreases through the expansion of the same. In the same manner the steam flowing between the rows of buckets and guide blades (or tightening rings) 7 and 8 will exert an axial thrust in the direction to the right on the wheel 6, said thrust also decreasing from the center to the periphery of Specification of Letters Patent. Application'filed April 27.1907. Serial No. 370.688-

1 said wheel. As now the openings 17-20 open axially opposite the openings 21-24, an equal steam pressure is established in the openings 17 and 21, 18 and 22, 19 and 23, 20 ,and 24, whereby the two wheels 2 and 6 are completely balanced.
' Plpes 28, 29, 30, 31, through which live steam can be admitted to each of the chambers 13, 14, 15, 16, are provided as shown in Fig. 2 for regulating the amount of power delivered by the turbine.
By admitting live steam to a chamber nearer the periphery steam is introduced to buckets and guide blades with a larger area and thus a larger amount of power is produced than if steam is introduced to a chamber nearer the center, as may be fully understood without further description. The admission of steam through the pipes can be regulated by hand or by means of a centrifugal regulator in any manner previously .well known.
I claim 1 In elastic fluid turbines of the radial flow type a stationary intermediate portion, a turbine wheel provided with concentric rows of buckets cooperating with concentric rows of guide blades on the one side of the intermediate portion, a wheel provided with flow type a stationary intermediate portion fluid admitting chambers in said intermediate portion communicating with the spaces between the wheels and the intermediate portion at equal radial distances from the turbine shaft.
4:. In an elastic fluid turbine and in combi- I'lation with a wheel of the radial flow type havin on its face a plurality of buckets, a plurality of independent ducts for respectively leading working fluid to said buckets concentric rows of tightening rings, co6peratbetween two rotating wheels, and concentric at points located at different distances from the wheel center.
5. In an elastic fluid turbine and in combination with a wheel of the radial flow type having on its face a plurality of concentric rings of buckets, a plurality of independent ducts for respectively leading working fluid to diflerent bucket rings.
6. The combination of a stationary compartment having guide blades on its face, a
radial flow turbine wheel having on its face buckets cooperating with said guide blades, and in said compartment a plurality of independent passages for leading working fluid to said-buckets at points located at different distances from the wheel center.
