Abstract

5219. Davey, H. March 13. Screw motors.-A whirling-chamber, in which the steam moves with a velocity greater than that of the turbine drum, is combined with a turbine in which the steam moves in the turbine itself and produces rotation by means of impediments or baffles in helical or other passages. Means for reversing, balancing, shortening, and increasing the power of the turbine are described. In Fig. 1, the drum or wheel A is secured to a shaft and contains helical steam passages F. Steam enters by the pipe C and passes the guide-vanes D, in the turbine casing, which direct it into a whirling- chamber E, whence it passes into the passages F to the outlet chambers G. The steam may then pass into another turbine or into a condenser. Two sets of guide-vanes D, D' may be used as shown in Fig. 3. The guide-vanes D<1> prevent the steam in the whirling-chamber from returning. Various forms of baffles are shown in Fig. 5. The passages F may increase in area as they approach the outlet end. In the form of turbine shown in Fig. 7, steam is admitted through expanding nozzles H into cups J, through guide blades K fixed in the casing, and then through other guide-blades L into the whirling-chambers before entering the helical passages. A reversible turbine is shown in Fig. 8 in which, by means of the valves R, R', R", R<111>, the steam may enter either of the end-chambers N, N', pass through the passages F, and exhaust at the other end. Guide-blades 0, 0<1> are fixed in the casing and wheel respectively. A reversing turbine is described having concentric right and left handed helical steam passages and a stop valve for each passage. A method of increasing the power of a turbine consists in providing the wheel with two sets of concentric passages, through which steam passes from opposite ends of the turbine. The turbine may be shortened by admitting steam at one end and allowing it to flow through one set of passages to the other end of the turbine and return to the exhaust through a second concentric set of passages. The steam passages, instead of being helical, may be in planes at right-angles to the turbine axis and have communicating passages as shown in Fig. 17, in which arrangement the steam enters at d, passes around the passage c with its baffles, and then enters the passage c<1> by the communicating passage d<1>.
