Abstract
20,159. Braddock, E. I. June 6, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Impact-wheels.-A turbine comprises a number of impact-wheels working in parallel, openings being provided in the radial blades whereby the motive fluid can act successively on a number of blades. Each wheel is made in two parts 10, 12, Fig. 3, having annular flanges 13, 14. Blades 15, 16, Figs. 3, 4, and 5, are made integral with the flanges 13, 14, respectively. When the two parts 10, 12 are bolted together, they form an impact-wheel with an annular channel across which project a series of blades. Openings 20, 21 are made in the blades 15, 16 respectively. These openings are staggered so that the motive fluid, in passing from pocket to pocket, is constrained to pursue a sinuous course, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 5. The motive fluid is admitted tangentially by a series of pipes 30, Fig. 2, one pipe being provided for each ring of buckets, and after passing round the wheel in a clockwise direction is exhausted through ports 31 at the bottom of the wheel. Duplicate pipes 34 for reversing may be provided. To prevent the admission of lubricating oil to the exhaust, a disk 35 is fastened to each end of the rotor, and flanges 36 project into annular channels 38 drained by pipes 39. Oil is fed to the bearings by pipes 41 and travels along the shaft until it reaches the disks 35 ; it is then thrown by centrifugal action into the channels 38 and drained away.
