Abstract

18,771. Belluzzo, G., and Gadda & Co. Sept. 7, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Elastic-fluid turbines. - A turbine installation for propelling ships with three shafts comprises three turbines, two highpressure turbines mounted upon the outer shafts, and a double low-pressure turbine mounted upon the central shaft and receiving the exhaust from the high-pressure turbine. Means are provided for varying the speed and reversing the turbines. Each of the high-pressure turbines comprises stages 1 ... 6, Figs. 1 to 4, the first three with simple curved blades, and the last three with double curved blades for obtaining movement in both directions. Figs. 1 to 4 are longitudinal sections on the lines Q-Q, P-P, and W-W, Fig. 5, respectively. There are two inlets such as A, Fig. 1, one or both of which may be used for intermediate and full speed respectively, and one or both sets of valves B, B<1>, B", Figs. 1 and 5, opened accordingly. The steam then passes successively through the stages 1 ... 4 and exhausts into the central low-pressure turbine. The stages 5, 6 run idle. For low speed, the inlets A and the valves B, B', B<11> are closed, and the inlet A<2>, Fig. 2, is opened. Steam then flows through stages 1, 2, Fig. 2, whence it is led through a pipe t to stages 5, 6, and it is afterwards allowed to flow back through a pipe t<1>, Fig. 3, to the central stages 3, 4, after which it passes to the low-pressure turbine. For reverse running, the valves F, I, M, Fig. 4, are opened, and steam acts on the reversed portions of the blades 6, 5, 4 successively, after which it is led away to the low-pressure turbine. For forward running the steam is led to the lowpressure turbine, Fig. 7, by pipes t<a>, and acts in parallel on the stages 7, 8, the steam exhausted from the stage 7 passing through the centre of the drum to the exhaust D<1> and being assisted by the spiders p, q, m, which are formed with fan blades. The stage 9 runs idle. For reversed running, the stages 7, 8 are idle, and steam is admitted to an annular chamber s and acts upon the stage 9, after which it passes to the exhaust D'. Specifications Nos. 11,176 and 14,336, A.D. 1906, are referred to.
