Elastic-fluid turbines.-In parallel-flow turbines, in order to eliminate end thrust or so to reduce it that it maybe taken by an ordinary thrust bearing, the steam is arranged to flow through the stages in opposite directions. In the two-stage turbine shown, the turbine is divided into two parts by a stuffing-box 3. The steam enters the ring chamber 5 and passes through the vanes 1 to the chamber 8. It is then led by a pipe 8<a> or through the hollow shaft to the second-stage wheel 2 and passes through into the exhaust 10. Any unbalanced thrust is taken by a bearing 13.
