Elastic-fluid turbines.-A turbine plant, which utilizes exhaust steam from some other steamusing plant and can be driven by high-pressure steam when the supply of exhaust steam fails, is arranged in three sections, two low-pressure and one high-pressure. When exhaust steam is being used, it is passed through the low-pressure sections in parallel. When high-pressure steam is being used, it is passed through the high-pressure section and one of the low-pressure sections in series. The combined high and low pressure sections are correctly proportioned one to the other, and together form a motor of the same power as that comprising the low-pressure portions in parallel. Fig. 1 shows a simple constructional form ; N, N<2> are the lowpressure sections, and the high-pressure section H is combined with the low-pressure section N'. Exhaust steam is supplied to the low-pressure sections by the pipe a, and when that supply fails, highpressure steam is supplied by the pipe C. The sections may be arranged within one casing. In one form the low-pressure sections are arranged as inner and outer concentric rings of blades N', N<2>, Fig. 2, and in another form as separate segments N<1>, N<2>, Fig. 5, of one ring of blades. The highpressure section H is arranged in series with the inner ring in the former case, and with the lower segment in the latter. In a modification of the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the low-pressure turbine is divided into four segments, and the highpressure turbine is in series with opposite segments.
