Abstract

Steam &c. turbines.-Relates to reversible turbines, in which steam is used expansively, each consisting of a number of turbine rings b, c arranged concentrically as shown in Fig. 1, or on the frustum of a cone as shown in Fig. 6. Vanes T' are provided for reversing the engine. Steam, air, or gas entering by the inlet a acts first on the vanes b, and is directed on to the next rung of vanes by guides g in the casing G, and so on, finally passing from the vanes c to the exhaust d. The communication between the pipes V and R and the supply pipe is controlled by a cock X. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the steam &c. passes through the turbine-wheel T alternately in opposite directions, whereby a balancing effect is obtained ; two such turbine-wheels may be secured to the same shaft, and may be situated in one casing and separated by guide-passages, or may have separate casings. In an outward-flow turbine, concentric series of vanes may be arranged on one side of the turbine-wheel for motion in one direction, and vanes for reversing arranged on the other side of the wheel The form of turbine shown in Fig. 6 has an end-thrust, but this may be balanced by the thrust of the propeller, in applying the engine to ships, or by fixing two turbines on the same shaft.
