Abstract

12,174. Rogers, J. E. May 24. Change speed gearing. - Relates to expanding cone - flange pulley gearing, suitable for motor-cycles, of the class in which the action of the belts on the pulleys is balanced by the reaction of helical surfaces, and comprises a construction of pulley in which one cone flange is connected to the boss of the other by a screwthread of rapid pitch. One flange F, Fig. 2, is secured to the engine shaft F<1>, and the other flange G is connected to the boss of the flange F by a steep screw X. The flange G is operated from a hand-wheel J, Fig. 1, by means shown in detail in Fig. 5. A spindle R, which is rotatively secured to the boss G' of the flange G, passes through, and is connected by ball thrust bearings W to, a screw-threaded sleeve M. The sleeve M gears with a nut N secured to a fixed frame D, and is secured to an operating-lever V. The lever V extends rearwards to its connexion with a screwed rod H operated from the hand-wheel J. Movement of the lever V screws the sleeve M into its nut N and co-operates the flange G. The lever V may also be tilted by means of an upwardly-extending branch carrying a pedal V<2>. The belt Z, Fig. 1, is automatically kept tight as the gear is varied by a jockey pulley T, the spindle U of which is carried in any one of a series of holes V<3> in the lower part of the lever Y.
