Motor-cycles; driving-mechanism.-Motor-cycles and light motor vehicles are provided with an expanding-pulley type of gearing driven by a V- belt, and the invention consists in effecting automatically the movement of the adjustable flange of the pulley by means of a series of weighted levers bearing against the outer face of the movable flange. The fixed flange A of the pulley has a tubular boss A<1> secured to the engine shaft B by suitable means such as a key C and a nut. The movable flange E is provided with a sleeve E<1> which slides on, but does not rotate relatively to, the sleeve A'. Pivoted bent levers H are carried by the outer end of the sleeve A', the inner ends of the levers being provided with rollers I which bear on the outer face of the flange E, while the outer ends of the levers H carry balls or weights J which are made adjustable according to the engine. The levers H are adjustably secured to the outer part of the sleeve A<1> by a ring K having lugs k through which pass pins k<1> which serve as pivots for the levers H. The ring K is screwed to the sleeve A', and is locked thereto by a washer L having a pin l which passes into a hole partly in the ring K and partly in the sleeve A<1>. The washer is secured by a nut M. When the speed of the engine is reduced by the rider or when a hill is met with, the levers H drop, the width of the groove of the pulley increases, and the belt falls. The slackness of the belt is then taken up by means of a jockey pulley operated by foot or hand. When the speed of the engine is increased by the rider, or by going down hill, the balls fly out and the groove in the pulley becomes narrower.
