Abstract

14,831. Alpe, H. J. June 20. Expanding pulleys.-A driving-shaft b has secured to it an expanding friction pulley a imparting variable drive to an internally-acting eccentrically-movable friction ring e. The pulley a comprises a fixed conical flange a' and a flange a<3> sliding on a feather a<2> and pressed towards the flange a' by a spring d. The ring e, the rim of which is of V section, may be encircled by the driving-belt f of a motor-cycle. When the ring e is moved to its extreme eccentric position, a loose ring k on its inner surface engages between shoulders l on the flanges a', a', thrusting these flanges apart, and yielding a " free engine." The ring e is secured to a revoluble part-casing g, which is supported on ball bearings h upon a partcasing g'. The speed is varied by turning a screw i carried by the part g' and engaging a nut j slidable longitudinally in the end of the shaft b. The invention is applicable to machine tools.
