Abstract

17,437. Flinois, L. L. Aug. 11. Motor road vehicles. - A friction clutch, which may be adapted for use as a brake for motor vehicles &c., contains no springs and exerts no lateral thrust on the shaft to which it is connected. The shaft a carrying the flywheel a<1> passes loosely through the centre' of the fixed double - threaded screw c. The belt pulley b is supported by balls g which run loosely in a groove in the nut e. To clutch the pulley b to the shaft a, the nut e is rotated by the arm f. The pulley is thereby moved till it bears against the covering o of the friction cone m keyed to the shaft a. The nut p keeps the friction cone m on the shaft a, and the set-screw q prevents longitudinal displacement of the shaft. The adjustable ring i is prevented from rotating by a screw k passed through one of a series of holes in the edge of the ring, or by a screw engaging with a hole k<1>, which is so placed that it is midway between two holes in the ring when the screw k is in engagement.
