Abstract

21,415. Bour [nÞe Thevenau], L. C. Sept. 27. Driving-mechanism.-Relates to variable-speed belt gearing for motor-cycles of the class in which the driving-pulley has a fixed and a movable conical flange and a loose central tread. Improved means are provided for operating the driving- pulley A and a tensioning-pulley Q simultaneously. The boss of the pulley A, Fig. 3, carries a fixed flange A<0>, and a flange B adapted to slide to vary the diameter of the groove which grips the belt C. The flange B has a hollow boss B<*> through slots in which pass screws B<3> into the boss A, preventing relative rotary motion. Oil-grooves a, b with inlet-holes a', b<1> are provided in the flanges. Removable face-plates A', B' are fitted externally. The central tread D, upon which the belt C may lie idle, rests on ball bearings, the hardened inner cones E, F of which are fitted and screwed, respectively, upon the boss A. The flange B is operated by a ball-bearing push-plate K guided by a fixed bracket M and actuated by a pair of pivoted eccentric plates G worked by a Bowden wire W. The belt C is kept tight by the pulley Q, Fig. 5, carried on an arm P pivoted about a screw R. The screw R has a depending part R<1> through which passes a Bowden wire W<1> attached to the arm P. The wires W', W pass to a bracket H, Fig. 4, upon the top bar of the cycle &c. and are both secured to a screwed sliding rod N. A handwheel 0 screwing as a nut on the rod N operates the pulleys A, Q simultaneously. Specifications No. 2441, A.D. 1879, No. 134, A.D. 1894, No. 23,096, A.D. 1902, and No. 17,020, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], are referred to.
