Description
FRANCIS M. NIXON, OF LENA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, WILLIAM I I'NITIEID STATES :PATENT FFICE LEET, WILLIAM DIXON, AND JACOB S. BEST, OF SAME PLACE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 88,065, dated March 23, 1869.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANcIs M. NIKON, of Lena, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Spinning Machinery, of which the following is a full, clear, and ex- I act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which makes part of this specification, and which represents aview, in elevation, of my improved machine.
My invention relates to that class of portable hand-spinning machines in which gearing is employed; and its object is to secure a strong, simple, and efiective machine, and one which can be adjusted to various speeds; to which end the improvement herein claimed consists in a novel construction, as hereinafter described, of a hand-spinning machine with a main stem, to which adjustable arms for the bearings of the driving wheel and spindle are pivoted, and which, also, carries the bearings for the counter-shaft which drives the bandwheel.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a stem -or frame of cast metal, provided with jaws and a clamp-screw, B, for securing the machine to a table or bench. This frame is adjustable ou the pivot fc', to set the wheel higher or lower.
The driving-wheel C is mounted on an arm, c, pivoted to the frame A by a nut and screw, c', by which means the axis of the drivingshaft can be adjusted, for a purpose hereinafter explained.
The drivin g-wheel consists of an internallygeared spur-wheel, D, meshing into a pinion, E, on a counter-shaft having its bearings in the frame A, and carrying a band-wheel, F, on its opposite end.
A band, G, encircling this wheel, drives a corresponding pulley on the spindle H, which spindle is also mounted on an arm, I, pivoted to the frame at t', by which means the driving-band can be tightened or slackened at pleasure.
The driving-wheel is turned by a pin or handle, d.
By moving the arm c, so as to bring its outer end nearer to the counter-shaft e, a larger pinion may be used, and the speed of spindle correspondingly diminished.
I am thus enabled by my invention both to regulate the tension of the driving-band and the speed of the spindle.
I am aware that hand-spinning machines are not new, and do not broadly claim herein any ofthe devices per se.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the frame A, of the internally-geared driving-wheel D, mounted 011 the adjustable arm c, and the countershaft e, carrying the spur-pinion E and bandwheel F, mounted on the stem, all constructed and arranged as set forth, whereby the speed of the spindle may be varied, as described.
2. The combination, as set forth, for joint operation, of the frame A, the adjustable driving-wheel D, the counter-shaft e, and the bandwheel F, with the adjustable arm I, carrying the spindle, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes specified.
j In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
FRANCIS M. NIXON.
Witnesses PHILIP MUssEn, SAML. J. DoDDs.
