Abstract
10,242. Rudge-Whitworth, Ltd., and Pountney, F. May 1. Variable - speed gearing for motor-cycles &c. comprises a pair of expanding pulleys a n d epicyclic reducing-geari n g connecting the driven pulley with the ultimately-driven member, such as a road wheel. A variable pulley 5 drives a pulley c which has a fixed flange o and a movable flange s. The flange o is connected by a sleeve q and a two-part sleeve e, f to the sun gear d of the epicyclic train. The flange s is supported by a sleeve r, which fits within and has a sliding connexion with the sleeve q, and slides over the sleeve f. The twopart sleeve e, f is supported at one end on a bearing g upon a fixed axle 1, and at the other end in a roller bearing h and axle bearing i. Planetary pinions d<1> carried on pins l roll round on a fixed internally-toothed ring j, and are driven by the gear d. The pins l are supported in a carrier k, which is connected by a sleeve m to the hub b to be driven. The flange s is operated through a thrust bearing w, a central rod z, and an adjustable screw 2. The pulley 5 may be constructed and combined with a clutch, as described in Specification 22,400/11.
