Abstract

467,393. Expanding-pulley gearing. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 1. 1936, No. 26635. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] A power transmission sheave of variable diameter-comprises a hub 27, Fig. 4, having a plurality of gear discs 32, 35 fast thereon, these fixed discs having a plurality of spaced apertures 38, Fig. 5, therethrough. A plurality of slidable discs 42 alternate with the fixed discs and each slidable disc 42 has spaced axial flanges 43 each such flange projecting through one of the apertures 38 and abutting against the next slidable disc. The slidable discs 42 with the flanges 43 are connected by through bolts 46 to an end slidable disc 41 to form a unitary structure which slides relatively to the unitary structure formed by an end fixed disc 32 integral with the hub 27 and other fixed discs 35 splined on the hub and held in place by a retaining nut 39. The sliding structure 42, 41 abuts against a nut 50 which screws on a thread 31 on the hub 27 and is turned relatively to the hub by a wrench to change the effective diameter of the pulley when it is stopped. A modified pulley shown in Fig. 6, can be changed in diameter while running. Between the hub 27 and the control screw 73 is a ball thrust bearing 61 which allows the screw 73 to be non-rotary when the pulley is running, and between the end sliding disc 41<1> and the control nut 68 is another ball bearing 70 which allows the nut to be held against rotation by an anchoring arm 72. The pulley while in motion is operated to change speed by a wrench applied to the squared end 74 of the screw 73. Means are described by which a complete pulley 20, Fig. 2, can be moved along with a driving motor 15, in the line of the V-belts (not shown) to maintain the belt tension while the diameter of .the rotating pulley is being changed. The motor 15 is carried on a plate 16 adapted to be slid in a line perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 2, when a control shaft 89 is turned by hand. The plate 16 slides in a straight line over four antifriction bowls 80. The control shaft 89, which is screwed to shift the plate 16, is connected through a bevel toothed pair (not shown) to a spindle 108 connected by a chain pair 109, 111 to the pulley control screw end 74 which is like that of Fig. 6, The pulley is carried in the line of the belts as its diameter varies.
