1825. Garrard, C. R. July 27. Clutches.-Relates to the arrangement in which a light claw or other clutch f, l is used to disconnect the driven member c of the main friction clutch from the gear shaft x during change of speed to avoid the effect of the inertia of the part c on the gearing, and consists in arranging a slipping coupling s, t to bring the part c and gear shaft x to the same speed before the clutch f, l is closed. Both clutches are operated by a lever o, the main clutch being arranged to open first and close last. The spring m which returns the clutches may be used to press together the outer parts s of steel &c. and the part t of fibre, copper, &c. of the coupling, or a separate spring may be used.
