Abstract

4570. Sutton, H. Feb. 29. [Cognate Application No. 15,989, A.D. 1908, dated July 28.] Planing. - The driving-pulley for the cutting- stroke of metal-planing machines, particularly of the type described in Specification No. 18,353, A.D. 1907, which are fitted with a balance or regenerating motion, is disconnected from the driving-shaft or driving-gear during the backward stroke, so as to eliminate loss of power, by friction claw or other clutches. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the driving- shaft a, which at its other end carries the pulleys for the ordinary sliding or tightening belts for producing the backward stroke, is connected to the pulley b by friction.disks g, j, the disks g fitting on projecting keys i on the boss h of the shaft, and the disks j engaging ribs k on the drum. This drum carries the pulley b and also a loose pulley c, if desired, to impose less load on the clutch when reversing. The disks are pressed into contact by a spring n, which at one end abuts against a plate p connected by rods q to a plate r adjusted by nuts s to regulate the compression, and at the other end abuts against a collar o which presses a loose boss m against the disks. The plates are released by a part of the machine moving forward a conical sleeve x so as to move out the levers v, which are pivoted to the sleeve t and connected to the collar o. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the driving pulley b is connected by gear y, z to the clutch mechanism on the driving-shaft a, which carries the reversing pulleys d. In the form shown in Fig. 4, the clutch is mounted on the shaft a, and the cutting-pulley b<1>, backing-pulley b, and loose pulley c, are mounted on the same shaft. The pulley b<1> is fixed to a pinion c<1>, and, through a spur-wheel f and any of the change-speed gears h<1>, j<1> connected by clutches k<1> to the shaft a, drives a pinion e<1> operating the wheel d', which is connected to the driving-gear of the machine. The backing-stroke is made by the engagement of a pinion y on the shaft a<1> with the wheel d'. In another form, Fig. 6, the cutting-pulley b<1> by means of a pinion y engages a spur-wheel z on the clutch shaft a, which has a pinion m<1> engaging the wheel n. The backing-pulley fixed on the shaft a' drives the wheel n direct through its pinion m<1>.
