Abstract

Variable-speed gearing; link - work. -Relates to an arrangement of levers for operating a sliding-wheel changespeed gear, specially adapted for use on motor-vehicles. The engine shaft 1 is connected through a clutch in a casing 2 to a driving-shaft 3, which carries a fast gear-wheel 4 and a clutch member 11. A countershaft 5 carries fast gear-wheels 9 &c. and a sliding wheel 6 adapted to engage the wheel 4. A driven shaft 7 in line with the shaft 3 carries, besides the usual sliding wheels, a combined toothed wheel 8 and clutch member 10 adapted to engage the wheel 9 and the membar 11, respectively. A lever 12, rocking about a fixed pivot 13, is connected at one end to the wheel 6 and is provided at the other end with a pin and roller 17 working in a slot 16 in a plate 15. The plate 15 is rigidly secured to a sliding rod 18 together with an arm 21 extending to the wheel 8. When the rod 18 is moved to the left, the wheels 8, 9 are brought into mesh and the pin 17 comes between parallel sides of the slot 16, locking the wheel 6 in gear position. On moving the rod 18 to the right, the members 10, 11 come into engagement, and the pin 17, being struck by the plate 15, is carried with it and drops into a poc ket 20.
