Abstract

6957. Winton, A., and Anderson, H. B. March 22. Variable-speed gearing; levers; mounting wheels on shafts.-Relates to sliding - wheel variablespeed transmission gearing, and more particularly to means for simultaneously throwing into and out of action the direct-drive clutch and the countershaft in a known type of gear. Driving and driven shafts 2, 3 are in line, the end of the sbaft 3 being supported in a bearing 6 within the shaft 2. Gears 14 &c. on the shaft 3 are adapted to be slid into mesh with wheels 10 &c. fixed upon a countershaft 4. The shafts 2, 3, 4 are all tubular, and both the fixed and the sliding wheels are mounted upon hardened keys 7, Fig. 4, passing right through slots, such as 11, L, Fig. 1, in the shafts. The fast-speed drive is effected by sliding the gear 14 to the right, when clutch teeth 15 engage recesses 16 in the face of a wheel 13 fast on the shaft 2. The shaft 4 is driven from the wheel 13 by a wheel 8 normally held in engagement therewith by a spiral spring 23 and adapted to be slid to the left so as to throw the shaft 4 idle during the fast speed. The elements 14, 8 are operated simultaneously by the movement of one of a set of selecting-rods 17. The rod 17 carries a rigid arm 18 attached directly to the element 14. A lever 19 attached at its upper end to the element 8 is adapted to rock about a fixed pivot 20 and to be engaged at its lower end by the arm 18, so as to be operated thereby when the rod 17 is moved to the right. The arm 18 can be moved to the left independently of the lever 19. The ends of the shaft 4 are provided with ball bearings 30. The rod 17 is locked by a spring- pressed ball 24, Fig. 2. Specification No. 13,029, A.D. 1906, is referred to.
