Abstract
4618. Forbes, Sir C. S. Feb. 25. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. The air and oil supplies to a carburettor are controlled by an aneroid barometer or other vacuum box' fixed in the carburettor. The petrol valve may be of any suitable type. The nozzle a with its orifice a<1> is supplied from the float chamber b. The flow of fuel is regulated by a sliding sleeve d connected to the vacuum box e supported by a sleeve f which carries a pointer h. By turning the pointer, the fuel orifice can be adjusted. A spring d<2> assists the box e. The air supply is heated by the exhaust coil k. A modification is described in which the' jet is vertical and a weight replaces the spring d<2>. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the vacuum box is fixed to the plate p supported by pillars q, and is connected to the air valve r normally held tight against the plate p. Under the influence of the suction, the box e aided by the spring d<2> opens the valve. In the event of aback-fire taking place, the valve r and plate p are forced outwards and the accumulated gases escape through the boles s. Both the petrol and air supplies may be controlled by a vacuum box.
