Control Of The Air-Fuel Ratio Of Carburetors
(AREA)
Abstract
4292. Binks, C. March 1. Gas or explosive-vapour engines, carburetting in. Means for adjusting the proportions of air and fuel in a carburettor for a petrol engine is described The carburettor chamber 1 has, working inside it, a conical air baffle 2, actuated by a spring-loaded spindle 3 and a connecting-rod connecting this spindle with the steering-pillar or with a foot-lever. The baffle may be controlled by the suction of the engine, and fits the chamber closely, and may be packed by rings 4. The air-supply inlet is shown at 5, and the fuel, coming from a reservoir 14 with a float as ordinarily employed, enters the carburettor chamber through holes 8,10 in the nozzle 6 and rotiry valve 9 respectively. These holes register for one position of the valve, which is kept in place by means of a gland 11 and nut 13. When the air baffle is in its lowest position, the suction effect on the nozzle is greatest and a large amount of fuel is taken up ; when it is in its highest position, the sucton is very small, and only a little petrol is drawn into the engine cylinder.
