Abstract

1458. Wicksteed, C. Jan. 19. Variable - speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to variable-speed and reversing gearing more particularly of the type described in Specification No. 10,389, A.D. 1906, and comprises operating and locking mechanism for the reversing-gear, and alterations in the arrangement of the controlling parts. The several clutches for the forward and reverse speeds are operated as described in the prior Specification by cranks on the shaft D, which is in the present invention arranged so as to be enclosed by an extension of the gear casing, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The shaft D is rotated by the hand-wheel B, Fig. 1, through bevel-gearing B<1>, D<2>. The reverse gear comprises an idle pinion G, carried in the end of a sliding plunger F and gearing with the wheels H, H<1>. The plunger F is moved up and down by means of an eccentric E<2>, working in a transversely sliding block E<3>, the eccentric being mounted on a shaft E operated by the separate handle C' and bevel-gear C', E'. The reverse is put into gear by turning the shaft D so as to engage the reverse clutch, and lowering the pinion G by means of the shaft E. The plunger F is locked in its highest or disengaged position by a stop I connected to an eccentric D' on the operating shaft D, except when the shaft is in the position for engaging the reverse clutch or the slow forward clutch.
