Abstract

20,047. Hanson, B. M. W. Sept. 9,1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Variable-speed gearing; clutches.-The driving- shaft 12 of a milling-machine carries a pinion 89<1>, Fig. 4, driving a hollow shaft 25 carrying a loose cone of gears, any one of which, for instance 85, becomes fixed by means of a sliding key 91 carried pivotally on a rod 90 having a circular rack 90<1> at the end, operated by a pinion, which is operated by a handle moving over a division plate. A cone of gears 21 carried on a sleeve on the driving- shaft is then driven, and, the clutch 14 being in the position shown, a pinion 22<1> drives a wheel V on a sleeve 25<2>, motion then being communicated through a similar sliding-key-adjusted cone of gears and worm gearing to a shaft 36, Figs. 1 and 12. When the clutch 14 is shifted to its other operative portion, the sleeve 25<2> is driven in the reverse direction by a pinion 20 and an idler. The shaft 36 carries two worms driving wheels 55, 38, Fig. 12, loose upon their shafts. To drive the chuck spindle 10 through the lead-screw 58, the wheel 55 is clutched to its shaft 51, thereby driving the lead-screw 58, the spindle being driven off the end of the lead-screw shaft by ordinary change gearing. To drive both the chuck spindle and the lead-screw from the auxiliary driving- shaft, the wheel 38 is clutched to its shaft 39, the wheel 11 on the live spindle thus being driven, and the change gearing then communicates the motion to the lead-screw. The lead-screw is rotated at increased rate to return the saddle from the pulley 48 by causing one of the clutches 41, 54 to engage teet 41<1>, 52<1>. The clutches are operated from one handle 73, Fig. 14, so that they cannot be put in together. A claw clutch 74 puts the hand shaft into engagement with the fork 50, or through toothed segments with the fork 60. This claw clutch operates a bellcrank lever 76<1> carrying a lever 78, so that, on pulling a knob 80, projections 81 or 82 are removed, allowing one fork to be operated.
