Abstract

21,098. Hotchkiss Ordnance Co., [Soc. Anon. des. Anciens Etablissements Hotchkiss & Co.]. Sept. 22. Machine guns.- Relates to firing- mechanism for gasoperated guns of the kind described in Specifications No. 29,118, AD. 1896, and No. 12,093, A.D. 1899. Figs. 1 and 3, respectively, show the mechanism in position for automatic and for single-shot firing. The breechoperating piston A is held in Its rearward position by a detent H, which is acted upon by a spring I and engaged at its upper end with a notch a in the piston and at its lower end with a shoulder e on the trigger block E; the forward motion of the detent is limited by rounded shoulders b in the breech casing B. The trigger block E is formed with an arm E' extended rearwardly below a transversely-mounted bolt K eat away at its centre to form a sector k<6>. If the sector is rotated by an external handle into the first position, Fig. 1, and the trigger is polled and held, the detent H is rooked and held out of engagement with the notch a, thereby permitting the gun to fire continuously until the trigger is released; the detent is then pushed forwards by the spring I and is raised into re-engagement with the notch by the shoulders. b. When the sector is in the second position, Fig: 3, it bears upon the arm E<2>, so that when the trigger is pulled it rocks the detent to release the piston A and is at the same time depressed by the sector, against the action of the spring F, to release the detent from the shoulder e. The detent is then free to reengage with the notch a of the piston, so that only single shots can be fired.
