Abstract

5142. Hotchkiss Ordnance Co., [BenÚt, L. V., and MerciÚ, H. A.]. May 1, 1907. Machine guns.-Relates to the firing and cocking mechanism of gasoperated guns. The breech is opened by hand, to commence the firing, by drawing the motor-piston F, Figs. 1 and 1<a>, rearwards by means of a cocking- piece J having a handle J<2> and, at the front end, a hook which engages with a slot y in the front abutment Y for the return spring K. The toe p<1> of the sear P normally enters a notch f<6> in the piston F and retains this piston at the end of its rearward stroke, until released by pulling the trigger Q<2>. The edge of the cap J<3>, Fig. 19, of the cocking- piece is formed with a projecting rib J<4>, with a flat portion j<9>, and with notches J<5>, J<6>, so that, according to the angular position of the cap J<3>, (1) the rib J<4> is caused to block the path of the trigger-piece Q to prevent firing ; (2) the trigger-piece is moved freely to the rear through the notch J6 and holds the sear out of action for continuous firing ; (3) the incline q<3> on the trigger-piece is caused to engage with the flat portion j<9> of the edge of the cap so that the trigger, when pulled, first rocks the sear to release the motor piston, and is then tilted by the incline q<3> and disengages the hook q<3> from the seararm p<2> so that single shots may be fired; and (4) the notch J<5> allows the trigger-piece to be tilted by the spring P' to. engage the shoulder q<4> with a stop d<12> on the trigger-casing D, for safety, when the gun is being assembled. The firing-mechanism is similar to that described in Specification No. 21,098, A.D. 1906
