Arrangements of springs with mounting complete in themselves. -Spring suspensions, specially suitable for road vehicles, comprise variably-acting lever mechanism arranged between the chassis and axle and acting upon a helical spring arrangement in such a manner that considerable flexibility is obtained over the normal range of axle movement while, for abnormal movement, the spring resistance is automatically increased at a rate quicker than the rate of increase of the movement. The suspension comprises a helical spring a, Fig. 1, acted upon by two oppositely arranged levers b, c which are actuated in a differential manner bv levers d. e operated in one direction or the other when relative movement occurs between the axle and chassis. As shown, the levers b, c are pivoted at i, j to a casing k fixed to the chassis and have curved arms b<1>, c<1> engaging curved surfaces of the levers d, e carried by a spindle m which is mounted in bearings in the casing k and is secured on a lever arm such as f, Figs. 7 and 8. connected to the axle p. A pair of such spring arrangements may be used alone to support the chassis as shown in Fig. 7, or a single spring arrangement may be used in combination with a laminated spring suspension, as shown in Fig. 8. The Provisional Specification states that the invention is applicable to landing wheels of aircraft.
