Abstract

177,942. Mutti, A. Feb. 17, 1921. Addition to 13448/13. Springs, arrangement of. -Relates to spring-controlled lever suspensions provided with means for automatically varying the leverage of the springs to accommodate different loads as described in the parent Specification, and comprises mechanism actuated by the rotation of the road wheels to bring the leverage-varying devices into operation. The invention is particularly described in connection with the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 of the parent Specification. The lever 52 is pivoted at one end 51 to the body of the vehicle and at the other end to a standard 1 supported by the axle, and is provided with a plate 2 formed with a pair of cam-slots 3, 4. A wheel 6, normally near but .not in contact with the hub or brake-drum 7 of the road wheel, freely rotates on an axle 5 which passes through the cam-slot 3 and is pivoted at 9 to the standard 1. A pair of discs 10, 11 carried by a shaft 12 passing through the axle 5, are arranged one on each side of the wheel 6. When the load on the lever 52 is varied, the wheel 6 is brought into contact with the hub &c. 7, and one of the discs 10, 11 is moved against the periphery of the wheel 6 by a bell-crank 14, 14<1> pivoted to a bracket 15 on the standard 1, the arm 14<1> engaging the cam-slot 4 and the arm 14 a double collar 13 on the shaft 12. The rotary movement of the shaft 12 is conveyed to the worm 18 of the leverage-adjusting device by a flexible shaft 16 and worm 17. Rotation of the shaft 12 may also be utilized to alter the position of the double eccentric 59, 60. The axle 61 of the double eccentric is carried by a yoke 26 which is raised or lowered by screw mechanism 22, 23 operated by worm-gear 20, 21 actuated by a flexible shaft 19 connected to the shaft 12. The flexible shaft 19 may be operated by a hand-wheel.
