Abstract
194,643. Stott, J. H. Dec. 20, 1922. Springs, arrangement of.-A full cantilever vehicle spring is arranged to give easy springing during the earlier portion of its deflexion when working alone, and stiffer springing during the later portion of the deflexion and, if desired, of the rebound when working in conjunction with a stop or stops controlling the rotation of its encastrement so as to change the springing at a predetermined point or points from the full cantilever to the quarter-elliptic type. The encastrement of the spring is pivoted at E, Fig. 1, to the chassis H in the usual manner, but at a predetermined point in the deflexion, the arm A, B of the spring is put out of action by stops F, G which prevent subsequent rotation of the encastrement. As shown, the same set of stops may operate during deflexion and rebound, but separate stops may be provided, and a single stop may be used in place of the stops F, G. The stops may be made adjustable by screw, eccentric, or other devices. A pair of cantilever springs, one or both stopped as described above, may be arranged as shown in Fig. 17 to replace a semi-elliptic spring by mounting the encastrement and one end A of each spring on a bracket K secured to the axle, the other end of each spring being connected to the chassis. The springs may be arranged to overlap so that the pivots E coincide as shown, or, to enable a shorter bracket K to be used, only the portions A, B of the springs overlap each other. The arrangement of the springs may be reversed so that 'the points C are attached to the bracket K, the points A, E being carried by the chassis. In the modified suspension shown in Fig. 32, the stops F, G are used to bring into action a pivoted or quarter-elliptic auxiliary spring during the later portion of the deflexon and, if desired, of the rebound of a main suspension spring. Specifications 141,436 and 188,428 are referred to.
