Abstract

5740. Stoney, T. B. March 9. Tidal energy, utilizing. - Consists in utilizing the rise and fall of the tide to work pumps which raise water to a high level reservoir or land, from which the water flows to drive dynamos. Fig. 1 shows a plan of the arrangement. When the tide has risen a certain amount, water is allowed to flow into the low-level reservoir E past pump turbines arranged in the chamber C, which raise water to the reservoir K. When the tide is high, the reservoir E is full, and, when during the ebb it reaches a certain point, the water is allowed to escape from the chamber E and operate the pumps. The water in the reservoir K flows to the dynamo turbines by the channel L and thence into the reservoir E.
