Abstract

166. Butler, J. M., and Williams, B. Jan. 4. Impact-wheels.- In order to convert the intermittent energy of the tide into a steady source of power, a wheel M, geared to two water-wheels A, B, is fitted with an eccentric O connected to a pump. When the tide has risen, water admitted through the sluice E drives the wheel A and passes through the valved openings F, G, H, K into the reservoir P, until it is full, when the vaives are closed. On the tide receding, the valve I is opened and the space between the walls is emptied. Water is then allowed to flow out of the reservoir P, first through the valve F, driving the wheel B by overshot action, then through the valve G, driving it by breast action, and finally through H driving it by undersnot action, any remaining water being allowed to drain out of the reservoir P through the valve K. The water pumped is delivered to a reservoir at a height and may be used as a continuous source of power.
