Abstract

166,739. Knowlton, J. A. April 28, 1920. Tidal energy, utilizing.-Relates to apparatus of the kind in which the rise and fall of the tide is utilized to compress air for driving machinery. A basin 11, Fig. 1, is separated from the tidal water 10 by means of a. dam 12 provided with sluces 13, 14. Within the basin 11 is built a walled enclosure 15, at one side of which is a sluiceway 16 communicating with the basin 11 and also with the tidal water 10 when the sluice 13 is opened. Within the walled enclosure is a spillway 17 and two basins 18, 19 closed at the top. On the top of these basins are mounted the turbines and control apparatus. The basins are connected through inlet and outlet air pipes 72, 74, Figs. 5 and 6, provided with non-return valves 73, 75 to turbines 34. Compartments 36, Figs. 3 and 5, and 37, Fig. 3, are provided communicating with the basin 11 and spillway 17 respectively and also with the chambers 18, 19 by means of passages provided with gates 47, 48. The gates are mounted on racks 52 and connected in pairs by links 58 so that when one gate is opened the other is closed. The gates are operated by means of electric motors 56a, 56<d> which are controlled by means of floats 42, 25, Fig. 6, mounted in wells 20, 21 communicating with the basins 18, 19. The floats normally rest on stops 26, but when raised by the inflow of water close the electric contacts 67, 70. The motors are electrically connected to operate in pairs so that when one chamber is open to the basin 11 and closed to spillway 17, the other is-open to the spillway and closed to the basin. In operation, the basin 11 is filled with tidal water through the sluiceway 13 and the spillway 17 left empty. Water is admitted alternately to the chambers 18, 19 compressing the air and forcing it through the pipe 74 to the one of the turbines and thence through the pipe 71 to the other chamber. The sluices 13, 14 are operated from time to time so as to obtain a difference in head between the basin 11 and spillway 17 and to empty the spillway to the sea at low tide. When it is desired to stop the apparatus, the sluices 39, 40, Fig. 3, are closed.
