Abstract

1,150,873. Hydraulic turbine installations. O. BURGESS. Aug. 17, 1966 [Aug. 17, 1965], No.35293/65. Heading F1T. In a scheme for obtaining power from river flow at tidal estuaries, a first dam 2 is built across the estuary and a second dam 8 is built across the estuary downstream of the first. A non-return sluice valve 9 is provided in the downstream dam and a hydraulic turbine set 6 is provided in the upstream dam, the turbine driving an electric generator 4 and comprising blade pitch control device 5. The space between the dams provides a tide-free basin which is gradually filled by flow of river water through the turbine at high tide but which empties to the sea through the non-return sluice valve at low tides.
