Abstract

1,014,196. Utilising wave energy. RYOKUSEISHA RABUSHIKI KAISHA. Nov. 24, 1961, No. 42147/61. Heading F1S. A device for utilising wave energy which floats on the water comprises a chamber 3 open at the bottom for the inward and outward flow of water with an opening 6 above for a working fluid (in Fig. 1 for air) and a turbine 14, 15 to be operated by the working fluid movement through the outlet to and/or from the chamber 3 caused by the periodic flow of water in and out of the chamber due to wave motion in the water supporting the device. The turbine drives a dynamo 8 to charge a storage battery 9 which is located inside a watertight buoyancy chamber 1 which is connected by a member 2 to a second buoyancy chamber 4 ballasted at 5. Valves 10 and 13 are open and valves 11 and 12 are closed when the air is leaving the chamber and vice-versa when air is being sucked into the chamber (Fig. 2; also Fig. 3, not shown). The device may be moored to the bottom by a cable with suitable buoyancy devices (Fig. 4 not shown). An alternative form of the device, shown in Fig. 5, has two open chambers 37 and 41 connected through pipes 44 and 49 and valves 42, 43, 45, 46, 47 and 48 with two closed chambers 38 and 40 at either end of the turbine 53, so arranged that the differences in wave level arising in the open chambers circulate air to drive the turbine. For this purpose the distance between the chambers 37 and 41 is chosen to relate to the length of wave which is expected.
