Abstract

158,048. Hutchinson, G. Oct. 22, 1919. Tidal energy, utilizing.-In a system for utilizing tidal energy in which turbines, built into the wall of a tidal pound and working for a limited period of both flow and ebb of the tide, pump water to elevated storage reservoirs from which high-pressure turbines are supplied, means are provided for economically utilizing the decreasing head available for working the tidal turbines by decreasing, either in pressure or in volume, the output of the pumps. In one arrangement, the tidal motors A, Fig. 1, are coupled directly to the pumps C, which supply successively the reservoirs D', D<2>, D<3> at different levels according to the power available, or one storage reservoir and pumps with variable stroke may be used, by which means the volume of output may be varied while the delivery pressure is maintained constant, or both these methods may be combined. The mains K<1>, K<2>, K<3> from the pumps to the reservoirs are also used for the supply of the high pressure turbines E', E<2>, E<3>, branch or by-pass pipes k<1>, k<2>, k<3>, being arranged so that any turbine may be supplied directly by the pumps simultaneously with the filling of the reservoir, the pressure on the turbine being thus equal to the head due to the height of the reservoir. In another arrangement, separate pipes are used for the delivery of water to the reservoirs and for the supply of the turbines therefrom.
