4349. Westley, J. March 1. Stuffing - boxes.-A reducing valve for steam and other fluids has an actuating piston, the upper end of which is exposed to the steam pressure. Anexcessof pressure causes the piston to be depressed and to rotate an eccentric so as to close the valve. The piston is packed by means of a tapered packing-ring r, which is secured by a cap r<1>, and the cylinder end is chamfered to allow any leakage of steam to press on and expand the packing-ring.
