Abstract
13,339. Lake, H. W., [Ingersoll-Rand Co.]. June 23. Stuffing-boxes ; cylinders.-The packing of a piston-rod is compressed by the steam pressure, so that the pressure of the packing is relieved during the exhaust stroke. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the packing is contained in a recess in the cylinder cover 2, which is formed in two parts held together by a sleeve 3. A follower 10 with a conical face is pressed on to the packing by steam admitted by passages 13. The follower carries a packing-ring 12, which is expanded by the steam pressure.
