Screw propellers.-The blade a, of the form shown in Fig. 1, is cast with or attached to the boss, and under working conditions its axis is at an angle of 40‹ to 50‹ with the horizontal. Driving-gear for screw propellers.- Propellers of the form described are arranged under the quarters of the stern, and their shafts are driven directly from rotary motors, or they are arranged as shown in Fig. 5 at the sides of the ship, and are driven from the shaft m, of a rotary, electric, benzene, or petroleum motor, by the belt i, shaft g', and bevelwheels g. Steering by screw propellers.-The propellers shown in Fig. 5, having right and left handed threads, are used for steering the vessel.
