19,867. Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Co., and Austin, H. Sept. 15. Driving - gear.-In vessels having main and auxiliary propellers driven by internal-combustion engines, the auxiliary engines used for propelling or steering are employed for facilitating the starting of the main engines. The main shaft A, which rotates in one direction only, is clutched to the shaft a having a spur-wheel H in gear with pinions G on the auxiliary propeller shafts D, which are fitted with gear-boxes F for reversing &c. The main engine is started by disconnecting the shaft a from the shaft A and starting the auxiliary engines E. One of the auxiliary engines may drive both auxiliary propeller shafts through the gearing G, H, in the same or opposite directions, or at different speeds. In some cases, a single auxiliary propeller and engine only are used. A dynamo K, driven from the shaft a, can be used as a motor to start the auxiliary engines. In a modification, a central auxiliary propeller shaft is geared to the shafts of main twin propellers.
