Abstract
3675. Holzapfel, A. C. A. Feb. 14. Driving-gear for screw propellers.-Consists in the provision of two internal-combustion engines, one of which is coupled to the shaft of the propeller or the like, so that it can propel the vessel ahead at a given speed ; the second, which may be of less power than the first and drives an electric generator supplying an electric motor coupled with the shaft, is either used for going astern, for starting the first engine by reversing the motor, for manoeuvring at slow speeds in either direction, or for furnishing additional power for going ahead when the first engine is running at full power.
