When the ship is moving at low speeds, the main engines are declutched and subsidiary small-power plant is used for driving the unused propellers at such speeds that they do not constitute a drag on the vessel. When one shaft b is in use, the engines d, f are declutched from the shafts a, c and the transmissions k of the small motors i thrown into gear. In order to cope with varying speeds of water passing the propellers on the shafts a, c, the current to the electrometers is controlled on the Ward-Leonard system.
