Abstract

10,850. Goldmann, J. May 1. Driving-gear for screw propellers.-The object is to enable the propulsion of a ship to be started, stopped, and reversed without the necessity of stopping or reversing the engine, and to permit a slow-running engine to be employed. This is accomplished by causing the engine to drive the propeller shafts, of which in the example illustrated there are three, by belts and bevel gearing. As shown in plan in Fig. 2, the engine, through belting b, drives a countershaft, on which are loosely mounted three pairs of bevel-wheels. These gear with bevel-wheels on the propeller shafts, and either wheel of each pair can be put into action by means of a friction clutch sliding on the shaft and controlled by hand-gear k, or both can be put out of action.
