Abstract
11,565. Huggins, W., aud Tares, J. May 15. Driving - arrangements for screw propellers. - In driving - gear for screw propellers operated by foot power comprising cranks, chains, cross-shafts, and bevel or spur gearing, the arrangement of the seats and gear is such that the centre of gravity is low. The cranks 1, Figs. 1 and 2, are carried by brackets 2, power being transmitted by chains 4, 6 to a cross-shaft 5. Bevelwheels 7, 8 drive the two propeller shafts 9, 10. The operators' seats 11 are at the level of the thwarts. When two operators sit abreast, the cranks may drive the propeller shaft direct through bevel or spur gearing, or when chains and a cross-shaft are used, a third series of operators can be provided for. In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the operators face the centre-line of the vessel, the series of cranks driving the propeller shafts 9, 10 by chain gear 16. The centre shaft 17 is divided, one half driving the shaft 9, and the other driving the shaft 10.
