Abstract

23,420. Burwood, G. V. Dec. 21. Auxiliary propellers for sailing-vessels.-Relates to screw propellers for small fishing-vessels which carry a steam boiler to work the capstan. The capstan engine may be used to drive the screw, or a separate engine may be employed, placed near the stern. A bracket a bolted to the counter has pivoted to it a pair of bars c, c, carrying at their lower ends bearings for the propeller shaft. As shown, the screw is driven from the shaft g by chain gear, but spur gear may be substituted. When the screw is in use, the bars c are locked in the vertical position by a revoluble plate o', which is operated by a hand-wheel from the deck. The screw is raised and lowered by ropes.
