Abstract
23,833. Jones, J. M. Nov. 3. Screw propellers; driviny-gear for screw propellers. -Screw propellers, more especially for aerial navigation but stated to be applicable for propelling vessels on or under water, are made in the form of spirals of semicylindrical or other section. The application to an air ship is described, where a large propeller 14, consisting of two or more semicylindrical spirals, is mounted on a vertical shaft 9 supported by ball or other bearings 10. A similar but smaller propeller 26 is mounted at the rear on a jointed shaft 23, 24, and is provided with a handle 38 by which the ship is steered. The propeller 14 is used for lifting and the propeller 26 for propelling the ship ; they are driven from a motor 33 through gearing, a ratchet being used to prevent the vertical propeller from revolving in the wrong direction.
