Abstract

5843. Tullis, J. K. March 20. Screw propellers for propelling and steering steam ships, and for use as auxiliary propellers for sailing-vessels, comprise a series of screws a, a<1> ... a<5> of small diametermounted upon one or more light shafts A, B working at high speed, in the case of steamships, in channels C, D, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, open to the sea. Loss of power consequent on the screws leaving the water is thus prevented, and vibration is minimized by driving the shafts by belts I, J from large drums H, G driven directly from the engine. The vessel can be turned in a little more than her own length by driving the port engines forward and reversing the starboard engines, or vice versÔ. As auxiliary propellers for sailing-vessels in rivers and canals, or during calms and light head-winds, series of screws mounted on short light shafts are arranged in channels C', D', Fig. 7, in the sides of the vessels, the openings to the channels being closed at other times by sliding plates N. The shafts are driven by belts from electric motors or high-speed engines.
