Abstract

23,161. Barcroft, H. Nov. 3. Driving-gear for screw propellers; screw propellers. -Relates to the adaptation of the arrangement of screw propellers described in Specifications Nos. 13,019 and 20,638, A.D. 1889, to vessels navigating shallow waters. In the previous arrangements, two screw propellers are used, rotating in opposite directions on concentric shafts placed above the water line, the screw blades being carried by radial arms. This invention consists in using two or more sets of such propellers arranged side by side and driven by chain gear from a single motor. Fig. 1 shows a plan of three sets driven from the engine shaft C by pitch-chains E, I, and Figs. 2 and 3 show an arrangement of chains for driving the inner and outer shafts respectively in opposite directions. All the inner shafts are shown as being driven in one direction, and all the outer shafts in the other, but the middle one of each set may be driven in the opposite direction to the wing ones. Other arrangements of the driving- chains are described. Two or more single screws may be driven by one motor by similar chain gear. Figs. 8 and 9 show means for securing the arms carrying the screw blades in the desired position. The arm, when screwed into the boss to the required distance, is placed with the blade at the proper inclination. A key M is then dropped into position, and secured by a wedge N, which is prevented from coming out by a lock-nut O.
